Lauren Wasser, who suffered a near-death experience with Toxic Shock Syndrome, has dedicated her life to spreading a message of body positivity and activism. We're proud to announce that the amputee, model, and activist will be added to our roster of Punks & Poets, and is featured in our new video series, A Verse of Her Own, shining a light on diversity and self-worth.
"We wanted to put one of our favorite muses in the campaign creative."
Lauren’s career started at a very young age. As a child model, Lauren rose to prominence in the print and runway markets with work for international brands. She excelled in the modeling industry as she grew older, and eventually explored improv acting at Groundlings.
However, soon after, her life took a devastating turn. In 2012, Lauren tragically lost her leg due to Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Lauren was hospitalized for months following the complications associated with TSS, including the amputation of her right leg and toes on her left foot.
As she recovered, Lauren was devastated and ashamed, unable to realize the power and beauty that lay within her new reality. Lauren’s girlfriend and photographer, Jennifer Rovero, aided her recovery through a process she coined as photo therapy. Rovero took hundreds of pictures of Lauren as she recovered, showing off her prosthetic leg to help Lauren become comfortable and proud of her new body.
"THE WAY SHE HAS TAKEN A TRAGIC LIFE MOMENT AND TURNED IT INTO A SOURCE OF EMPOWERMENT TRULY EMBODIES THE CONFIDENCE AND ORIGINALITY THAT DEFINES OUR BRAND."
“After two years in the making we are excited to launch this new category for Stance and bring a fresh creative take to a product that will help women feel confident and expressive," said our CMO, Candy Harris. "Along with a focus on innovative materials and everyday comfort, we wanted to put one of our favorite muses in the campaign creative. Lauren is an inspiration on many levels, but the way she has taken a tragic life moment and turned it into a source of empowerment truly embodies the confidence and originality that defines our brand. We’re honored to be a part of her journey and can’t wait for women to experience what we’ve created.”
