The Inaugural MLB London Series

History was made last weekend with Major League Baseball staged in Europe for the first time at the inaugural London Series. Long-standing divisional rivals the New York Yankees were pitted against current champions the Boston Red Sox for two regular season games in which the teams combined for 65 hits and 50 runs in a balmy summer slugfest.

After the anthems and team introductions, the Yankees shot to a six-run lead with shortstop, and Stance Punk & Poet, Didi Gregorius doubling after the opening hit from first baseman, Luke Voit. Boston would answer with six runs of their own in a crazy first innings, the win eventually going to New York 17-13.

It would be a stellar weekend for Didi who would go on to hit four RBIs including one over the wall in game two, the 4th and final New York home run of the series. "The atmosphere was crazy," Gregorius told

"It's what you want to see. It was like a soccer match, but with baseball. The fans were into it since the game started. It was pretty cool."

New York would go on to take both games by winning Sunday’s match by 12 runs to 8. It was no roll over by the Red Sox who took the current AL East league leading Yankees offense all the way in a high scoring match-up which delighted 120,000 baseball fans who came from around the world to watch the show at London Stadium.

The ‘old ball game’ brought the best of the American League - runs, peanuts, crackerjacks and all. We’ll for sure be back for next year’s National League series which will see the Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals visit the UK.
